The problem

Few teams can say what a collection is scientifically worth. Journal name and raw citation counts measure prestige and activity, not value — and they say nothing about the potential still locked in the samples.

The Biobank Advisor scores three things instead: the impact a collection has realized, the intrinsic potential of its specimens, and the gap between them — the single most actionable signal a steward can have.

The distance between specimen potential and realized impact — distinguishing an underexploited treasure from a collection that has been fully mined.

How it works
Enter a collection by name, or a study (PubMed ID / DOI) that used it. A study resolves to the collection it drew from, so the result is always that collection's valuation — not the individual study's. The valuation has three parts — Impact (scientific impact its specimens have realized) · Potential (intrinsic value of the specimens) · Gap (Potential − Impact, the actionable signal) — all shown locked in this free demo. Reference collections are shown coded.
Linking a study to its collection is by name mention in the title/abstract — a heuristic, not verified data-use, so a study that uses a collection without naming it may not resolve.

Methodology

Built on transparent, peer-reviewed bibliometrics

Impact is grounded in free, open, peer-reviewed sources — the NIH's Relative Citation Ratio (iCite) and OpenAlex field-weighted citation impact. Potential is a maintained, expert-curated valuation of each collection's specimens. No proprietary impact factors, no black boxes.
